Expert Guide to KEEPING YOUR PAVERS CLEAN & NEW

As you know, pavers are extremely durable and obviously beautiful! But one of the most important features of a paver driveway, that most homeowners, enjoy,  is that pavers are very easy to maintain and clean. Many homeowners and clients of ours,  who have paver driveways, always email or call our office to ask us  “  what is the best way to clean my paver driveway.” So today we are going to discuss with you the easiest and safest ways for you to clean your paver driveway and keep it looking fresh and new all year around. ‘

Depending on what you currently have on your driveway, you are going to want to remove any plants, statues or excess furniture that may get in the way of cleaning. We suggest that your driveway is free and clear of any excess debris before starting. The second thing you want to do is make sure you have the appropriate cleaning solution for your pavers. There are a few different paver cleaners that you can purchase at your local home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot. If you choose to buy your paver cleaner at a store, I suggest asking someone who works there to assist you in making the correct choice. Sometimes over the counter cleaners can be more acidic and can cause damage to your pavers. Regardless of the cleaner solution you choose to buy, make sure you follow the directions that the manufacturer  provides on the label.

Can I Make My Own Paver Cleaner?

Now, if you are choosing to make your own cleaner, one of the easiest and most trusted ways to clean your pavers is with a soft household cleaner, like dish detergent and a mixture of warm water.  To make this mixture we suggest you  fill up a gallon sized bucket or pale with warm water and add approx 16oz to 20oz  of your cleaning solution. You will then mix the soap and the water thoroughly.  When you are done, and your cleaning solution is ready, you will gently pour the solution over your pavers, one small area at a time. Once the solution is on the pavers, you can now scrub the area with a stiff bristled broom.  We suggest using these types of brooms, as they will help detach  any dirt and stains that may have accumulated onto your paver surface.  If you are noticing that your pavers are extremely dirty, you may want to leave the cleaner on the pavers for a little bit before you start scrubbing. This will allow the cleaner to really penetrate the area and help loosen the dirt and grime even more. After you are done applying the cleaner throughout the driveway areas and scrubbing your pavers clean with the bristled broom, you can start to rinse off all the excess cleaning solution and grime from the driveway surface. You don’t need to have a heavy duty pressure washer for this part, you can use a regular garden hose. If you do choose to use a pressure washer, please don’t point the tip directly at the paver joints. If you do, you will end up not only washing away the surface stains, but also the sand in between the paver joints. If the sand washes out, you will need to apply new bedding or poly sand to the paver joints. We recommend thoroughly cleaning your paver driveway every couple of months.
